How to buy and install a tonneau cover

It’s great that you’ve decided to get yourself a tonneau cover – having one for your vehicle greatly improves the security and the protection of the truck bed. The hardest part though is not about contemplating whether to buy or not buy a tonneau cover but figuring out which tonneau cover to get and find out how to install it. Well, you shouldn’t look no more as here’s a short guide for finding the right tonneau cover you need and how to install it.

Tonneau covers come in a variety of types and you might be surprised to know that there are hundreds of models in the market but can be easily categorized to a few. Finding the right one is just a matter of figuring out what you need and your budget. First off, figure out how much you’re willing to invest for a truck bed cover. Out of the two main categories of tonneau covers – hard and soft – the hard covers naturally come more expensive as they’re usually made of aluminum or fiber glass while the soft covers are made of soft materials such as vinyl cloth.

For a price range, hard covers usually come at around 500 to 2000 dollars depending on the quality and materials used. Soft covers on the other hand are more affordable at 200 to 600 dollars also depending on type and quality. After setting up your price range, go ahead and order your cover. There are several re-sellers or manufacturers that offer free and fast tonneau cover shipping.

Once you have your tonneau cover on your doorstep, you’d be excited to install it and immediately experience the benefits of having it on your truck bed. First off, grab a friend and a few tools or better yet, look up the instruction manual to find out which tools you’ll need to get it installed. Most covers come pre-assembled and oftentimes require no drilling. Having someone to help you is optional but it makes things a lot easier especially when mounting a hard tonneau cover.

The instruction manual basically covers everything but if it did not come with one and you’re at loss, find out if the package came with four long bars. There should be two sets of identical bars which you can assemble to form a rectangle. This will be your tonneau cover frame, which you will mount on the top of the truck bed. Basically mount the tonneau cover onto the frame and the frame to the truck bed. It will either be screwed or snapped onto the railings but as long as the cover matches the dimensions of your truck, it should fit easily.
